The Lowe-down.

Daisy Lowe is the daughter of Gwen Stefani's other half, Gavin Rossdale, and hot designer Pearl Lowe. And just by association, that makes her pretty awesome. Eek!

Sorry for the slowness in updates lately guys!! Exams coming up here at school...just 2 weeks and then I'm done! So it might be a little quiet but as usual, there is good stuff on the way. To tide you over until the next update...check out this picture from Plastique magazine, with Andi Muise looking pretty kickass. I can't wait to see the rest of this fantastic editorial!

The Paddingtons!

Sort of a fashion related post, sort of not.

Here's miss Agyness Deyn (former interviewee of the this site) with the British band The Paddingtons.

Apparently she's dating guitarist Josh Hubbard.

Here's there Myspace page where you can listen to a couple of demos...not bad, if you ask me: The Paddingtons!

Strange?

This picture just surfaced on the IMDB boards for Gemma Ward's upcoming movie with Liv Tyler, called "The Strangers".

The plotline goes like this: "A young couple cozied up in a vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants." Seeing as how Gemma plays one of the unknown assailants, I wonder if that's her in the picture?

On the Top.

So www.teenvogue.com recently put out a "10 Best Dressed List" - and I agreed with most of the choices, which included stunners like Kate Moss, Jeisa Chiminazzo, and Kate Mara...however...at #4 was Mischa Barton.

Now, I love Mischa, I really do, I think she's gorgeous...but let's be honest folks. How does someone who wears that get placed at #4 on a best dressed list?

All for Alana.

Lately I've been sort of baffled by the attitudes of some people in this industry. Of course, you hear stories of the Naomi's out there, but it's pretty interesting when you actually run into people with that sort of attitude personally. It just amazes me - I'd think that people would feel lucky and privledged to work in such a great industry, and be modest about it, instead of being arrogant, but if I thought that - I'd kinda be wrong, wouldn't I?

There are diamonds in the rough though, like Alana Zimmer, a stunning Canadian model, who is rumored to be in the upcoming Marc Jacobs and Missoni campaigns. She was such a pleasure to talk to - answering my simple "How are you?" with a "I'm really good thanks, how are you?!" Super cute. Alana is with Supreme in NY, and since she appeared in the international runways in the SS07 season, she's been everywhere! She's been in all the top designer shows, plus had awesome photoshoots in top magazines like Numero and Vogue Nippon.

Age: 19
Height: 5’11
Where are you from? Kitchener, Ontario, Canada
Where do you live now? Kitchener/New York
Favorite show (that you've done)? That is a tough one; every show has had certain aspects that make them memorable! Maybe Dior Couture though, it was so beautiful!
Favorite photoshoot (that you've done)? Also a tough one! Each shoot has taught me so much but I think the Self Service story I did with Dan Jackson in 40 degree (Celsius) quarry heat takes the cake!
Describe your personal style: I don’t really have style! I am just casual and comfortable.
Did you complete school (or are you finishing school now)? I completed high school but would eventually like to go to college.
If you weren't modelling, what would you like to be doing? Working at East Side Mario’s and likely attending college for pre-health science.
Top 5 bands/artists:
Johnny Cash
John Mayer
Madonna
The Fray
The Rolling Stones
Top 5 movies: I cannot just pick 5!
Blood Diamond
Click
Green Mile
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Steel Magnolias
The Notebook
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Crash
And ANYTHING with Will Farrell (he kills me)!
Favorite book: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
What's your drink of choice? Water!
What are some of the perks of being a top model? Travelling the world and experiencing each country. The idea of being able to help out those in need with extra money I make.
What are some of the things about being a model that are most difficult? Being judged at all times, never knowing where you will be from one day to the next, and being away from my family and friends at home!

I hate to be Blunt, but...

Um hi, how gorgeous is she?

...From her Interview Magazine (May 2007) spread.

"Life is ambiguous, isn’t it? It’s never as black and white as you see it in the movie."

Fantastic Plastique!

I am so, SO excited about this post. I got the chance to talk to a really awesome and talented photographer named Jeffrey Graetsch, who has been given the honor of shooting the cover and various spreads inside of the upcoming Plastique magazine, which will have it's first issue out around the beginning of May. He also let me take a sneak peak at the spread entitled "Zero Degrees", starring model Katarina Ivanovska.

Here is another version of the cover (I posted a smaller/purpler version when I did cover girl Andi Muise's interview)!

And the first page of Katarina's 14 page spread! This looks amazing...I know the rest of the issue is going to rock as well.

And now onto the interview with the genius Jeffrey:

How did you get started as a photographer?
This is not an easy question for me to answer...there are many different influences that brought me into photography. I never planned on getting into photography...I just stumbled into it by means of fate.
I have always been enamored with the "image"...and the whole idea of "Identity". I have always believed that everything revolves around Identity. We are all trying to find out who we are. It's a never ending search.
My love for Fashion and Photography, really started at an early age. As a young teenager I grew up reading fashion magazines...partly due to the influence of my sister. I had always payed attention to who shot what, or who designed what...I don't really know why! I was a skateboarder, that read fashion magazines?!
From there on, I went to college to study fashion. I was the only male amongst 110 females...it was interesting. By graduation, I had won 2 of the 3 awards given out...and was encouraged to become a stylist. I didn't feel that was the right place for me. Instead, I fell in love with 20th Century Furniture Design. It was my escape from an industry that at the time, I felt was too superficial for me. Collecting mid-century modern furniture by the masters of 20th Century Design helped me see "purpose" and "function" again.
After college I met a photographer, by chance. He was a Canadian photographer, by the name of Chris Nichols. After conversations about other photographers and lighting, he told me that he never had an assistant that had said the things that I had said to him. Still don't know what I had said, that made him see me this way. He quickly told me to come hang out in his studio, and learn from him. It was an amazing experience! He was extremely talented!
I ended up leaving the studio a few months later, when I had met one of the biggest influences of my life...a man by the name of Robert Young. He was a creative director...a brilliant man, with impeccable taste. He took me on as if I was his son...and taught me to be an art director...I think I was about 21 or 22. He showed me what to look for on the film...he made me make all the selects on certain jobs...followed by a long conversations. We both shared the same passion for 20th Century Design, and I would frequently help him build his collection...which was the most amazing collection I had ever seen. He always told me that my mind was way too editorial for Canada...and encouraged me to revisit the camera. This was the true beginning. Robert died of Aids in 2005...and left a Last Will and Testament with my name on it. It was extremely overwhelming to see a man's life slowly taken, in such a negative way, and to know that I had impacted his life, in a positive way.
I was 25 when I left Robert's agency and bought a camera. I really didn't know what I was doing...I think Daria (Werbowy) was the first girl I took pictures of. She was a good friend of mine...and not the "supermodel" that you now know her to be. She made it so easy for me, but...the film was so under exposed. From there on, I started testing like crazy...I was pretty much getting payed by the agencies...to learn how to use a camera. I can laugh about that now!! That was 5 years ago...so crazy. It was in 2002 that agents from IMG encouraged me to move to New York. So I did.
I put my own camera down, and started assisting...it was amazing. I assisted people I once only read about...Alexei Hay, David Sims, Sam Haskins, Dusan Reljin, Alexie Lubermirski, Alasdair Mclellan, Vanina Sorrenti...and then Tom Munro, as his first assistant. I left Tom and I went on my own at the beginning of this year.

Do you remember your first professional photoshoot? What was it?
My first "professional" shoot was a 6 page, men's fashion story for a Canadian men's fashion magazine...I think I was 24 or 25 years old. It happened on Independence Day, oddly enough. My first shoot after leaving as Tom Munro's First Assistant...was a men's beauty story for Wonderland Magazine.

What is your "daily work" like?
Mostly pre-production, or post-production...phone calls, and sitting in front of a computer, emailing. Also...I read a lot.

What has been one of your most successful photoshoots so far?
I would have to say...my 2 stories for the new British fashion magazine, Plastique. I have 22 pages, and the cover.

Have you ever had a run-in with a difficult model on set?
I have...I think it mostly comes from inexperience on the model's end. They just don't understand what to do, maybe because they are young, and new...they just aren't comfortable in the own skin yet. A lot of them don't understand the industry...and have just been pushed into it.

Who are some of your big photographic influences?
Richard Avedon. He brought life back into pictures...the movement that you see so many replicating today. Peter Lindbergh, because he has such an incredible attitude...and passion for the "Face". His pictures are beautiful. I also admire the work of Mario Sorrenti. He is so young for what he has accomplished. He has an amazing eye. Sometimes, I feel that the industry is lacking these types of role models that have passion, that is translated into their pictures. I sometimes feel that the industry has made the photographer, more important then the pictures.

Is there any work of yours that we should expect to be seeing in magazines in the upcoming months?
Plastique Magazine launching this month. There are some other things in the works.

What sorts of assignments are most appealing to you?
The ones that allow you to dream.

Your girlfriend is a model, and you are a photographer. Has this impacted your relationship in any way?
Work-wise...it had mostly impacted our lives in a positive way...mostly, because we both understood the industry. We were both trying to achieve the same thing...a great picture. The only difference is that we were just on opposites sides of the camera. The only negative...is that we were away from each other a lot. It was hard not seeing her incredible face, first thing in the morning...I hope that didn't sound too personal. When Andi was away... she forgot about me.

Do you have any comments or words of advice for anyone looking to get into the photographer field?
Photography, Fashion, Design, Architecture...this is all a way of life. Its not a job that you go to 9-5, just because it sounds fun, or for any other superficial reasons. You have to be passionate!! You have to be a dreamer!! And then live it 24-7!!! Don't be afraid to see the "Beauty" in things...and to see them your own way. Try not to be influenced too much by what others do. There are no rules in photography...its all about how you use your tools, to assist you in achieving what you desire.

I will leave you with some quotes that have impacted myself...

"A good artist, never blames his tools"
"You are only as good as the people, you surround yourself with"
Robert Young.

"Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera"

"Those who restrain their desires, do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained"

"Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible. I think it's in my basement.... let me go upstairs and check"

My mother said to me, "If you are a soldier, you will become a General. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope." Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso"

From wwd.com, at interesting tidbit about Fendi.

A WALL DELAY: Citing scheduling conflicts, Fendi has decided to stage its fashion show on the Great Wall of China later this fall rather than over the May long weekend. The Roman fashion house is working with Chinese authorities to pinpoint a date during the third week in October for the massive event. "It's a much easier time to do it," said Fendi chief executive officer Michael Burke. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton chief Bernard Arnault is slated to attend, as are Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, who are designing special pieces for the show.

Interesting choice for a show location, no?

Also interesting...Raquel Zimmermann, SS07 Fendi girl and current Vogue US cover girl, is back for the FW07 campaign! While I'm not usually a big fan of her's, I love love LOVE the Fendi ads.

Just to switch things up today, I wanted to post an interview with male model Jamie Strachan. There is always so much stereotyping about male models - even more so than female ones, sometimes - but I think you'll find that Jamie is just your typical guy (except just a TAD bit more gorgeous than most). He's made a living working for top names like Gucci, Hugo Boss, Versus, Kenzo, and Dries van Noten. He is currently #36 on the male model rankings on www.models.com!

Top 5 movies:
- Pulp Fiction

- The Lost Boys
- Edward Scissorhands
- Walk the Line

Favorite book: Shawney By Ed Trewavas and The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart

What's your drink of choice? Zubrowka vodka and apple juice.

What are some of the perks of being a top model? Traveling, meeting interesting people, freedom, being self employed!

What are some of the things about being a model that are most difficult? Flaking on friends cause you get last minute work, bordom, the stereotypes that come with it, airports!!

Not Plain Jane's.

Although I think it's safe to say that Kirsten Dunst and Bryce Dallas Howard have made quite a few fashion mistakes in the past, their new cover for Jane Magazine is beautiful and bright - the perfect thing to see on this finally perfect day here in Vermont!

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Well unfortunetaly, this morning on the Today Show, the Vogue girls were absent, due to coverage of what has happened at VT. However, there is a small video of them up on Style.com, which I've put here for you guys to watch!

Monday, April 16, 2007

In a post totally unrelated to fashion, I just want to say that my thoughts are with anyone who is involved in any way with what happened today at Virginia Tech. RIP to those who lost their lives.

New Superstars from Mode!

Mode Models has made some AMAZING new discoveries recently.

Taylor Fuchs is 6'2 and signed with IMG in New York. He recently shot an editorial for 10 Magazine, as well as pretty big campaign with a pretty big photographer!

Gloria Loitz is just 15, standing at 5'9.5. She hasn't been placed in any other agencies yet, but it's only a matter of time! Here are some polaroids and pictures from a recent test shoot!

Keep an eye out for these superstars in the future, they're sure to be everywhere!

Friday, April 13, 2007

I just love this new cover for Alef Magazine, where Heather Marks appears, rocking an awesome Prada turban. Plus this is only the 2nd issue out - and the first cover had Natalia Vodianova on it...not exactly a bad person to follow!

Get ready for some big updates this weekend! Also, get ready for some interviews coming up, with girls from Taylor Warren (who's going to be next) to the gorgeous Erin Heatherton (one of the best new models to come out of last season), who I spoke to last night. Others on the list include the Alef cover girl, Heather Marks, as well as Behati Prinsloo, Jamie Strachan, Britni Stanwood, and the awesome booker from Elite, Matt Gidlevich!

My Muise.

Andi Muise is perhaps one of the sweetest models I've had the chance to talk to. And she totally helped me out by letting me interview her, even though she was having a crazy and hectic day! Anyways, this beautiful brunette is known for a number of things - for appearing in both the 2005 AND 2006 Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows, her incredible Emporio Armani ads, and for walking the runway for the nutty Santiago Rice on Project Runway's season finale.

Here is a preview of her upcoming cover on Plastique magazine:

Did you complete school (or are you finishing school now)? I left school after I completed grade 10! I am planning on finishing but I just dont have the time right now!

What's your drink of choice? Hahah...sugar free vanilla non-fat iced latte...blended! From Starbucks

What are some of the perks of being a model? I love how I can travel the world, meet many different people and experience many different cultures.

What are some of the things about being a model that are most difficult? Competition of all the other girls and the "look" of the moment! People always judging you by HOW YOU LOOK, and the whole weight issue.

(P.S. To Lea: Taylor Warren is up next, I swear! I just wanted to post soon this as a favor to the darling Andi.)
So by now I'm sure you've all already heard, but it looks like miss Gemma Ward is not the only model moving into acting! It turns out that right now, Lily Cole is working on filming a flick called "St. Trinian's". According to IMDB, this is what the movie is about: St. Trinian's, a school for "young ladies" with its anarchic doctrine of free expression, brings together a motley crew of ungovernable girls who, using their wit and ingenuity, save the school from bankruptcy.

Lily will be working alongside actors Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, and Emily Watson. Even though the description sounds a little wacky, I can't wait to see her on the big screen, cause she looks so adorable!

Vogue Cover

So today a tiny, fuzzy image of the May Vogue US cover appeared, announcing some of the world's "top models".

Personally, I'm happy with the choice of models - except for, of course, Chanel Iman, who seems to have created quite a stir. I just feel that although she is a beautiful and talented model, she does not deserve (yet) to appear alongside legends like Caroline Trentini and Jessica Stam. Although she's had 2 very impressive seasons, she hasn't gone to amazing lengths just yet.

Saturday, April 7, 2007

I was positively giddy when I heard there were new Cintia Dicker pictures up at the Why Not website! Okay she's a little airbrushed (where are the freckles?) and it's in b&w so we can't see her red hair...but still. SO glad to see my favorite redhead back in action after totally dissapearing this season. And really, Cintia has been all over lately...

Elle Brazil (March 2007)

Quem Brazil (March 2007)

Glamour France (May 2007)

And the new awesome picture from Why Not (one of her agencies)!

Oh and of course...who could EVER forget these incredible new polaroids, from COACD.

How I've missed you, favorite redheaded model.

Sweet Samantha.

Samantha Ypma is a young, up-and-coming model, who is currently with (my favorite agency) Mode Models! Just to change things up a bit, I wanted to talk to her, but I switched the usual questions I asked around so that I could get a bit of an inside look at what a budding model goes through before making it at the top. She recently walked alongside a number of top models at Calgary's Bella show.

Full Name: Samantha Rose Ypma

Age: 14

Height: 5'9

Where are you from? Alberta, Canada

Top 5 bands/artists: Hmm...

Who are you currently signed with (agencies)? Mode Models, New York Models, and Why Not Models.

What first interested you in modeling and fashion? America's Next Top Model! Even though thats not what its all really like that is what first made me want to do it!

I know you've recently been in NY for work, doing castings and test shoots. What specific things did you get to do? Haha I did 5 tests this time in NY and quite a few castings but thats about it! Its so much fun getting to meet all of the new people, I love it!

Is the whole process what you thought it would be or have there been surprises? Its a lot more work than I thought it would be. I also thought everyone would be kind of mean or stuck up but we haven't had a bad experience yet! It has been amazing so far!

What's up next for you in the coming months? ?? I have no idea!

Any advice for others starting to get into the industry? Have fun with it! Just enjoy it. Its a great experience.

It was quite interesting the other day when the following picture of Australian model Miranda Kerr and actor Orlando Bloom surfaced. Rumors of course started flying, saying that the two had coupled up and were apartment hunting together!

However, today, www.justjared.com posted this: Model Miranda Kerr is denying she and Orlando Bloom are an item after web sites speculated from recent photos that the two were looking for an apartment together. Turns out their outing was a publicity stunt set up by Atelier condo tower. The building has offered apartments to celebs, including Lindsay Lohan, to generate buzz.

Glad that's cleared up!

But in REAL new couple news, model Jessica Stam is shacking up with ex-boyfriend of both Nicole Richie AND Mandy Moore, the infamous DJ AM.

I Scream for Shaina.

The following is an interview with up-and-coming model Shaina Danziger. She's currently with Elite and has a fantastically androgenous yet gorgeous face.

Full Name: Shaina Danziger

Describe your personal style: A bit of rock and roll mixed with classy staples, some vintage, and a unique edge

Did you complete school (or are you finishing school now)? Completed high school and did a tid bit of college online but don't have the time for it now!

If you weren't modeling, what would you like to be doing? This is going to sound so cliche but I have done a bit of acting and really enjoyed it, so if I weren't modeling, I think I might like to do that.

Top 5 bands/artists:
- Modest Mouse
- Nirvana
- Metallica
- Pixies
- Interpol
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs...I know that is six, but they are my favorites!!

Top 5 movies:
- A Clockwork Orange
- Les Choristes
- Death Becomes Her
- Drop Dead Fred
- Funny Face

Favorite book: Zadie Smith - On Beauty

What's your drink of choice? I don't drink alcohol. I try to drink a lot of mineral water and just bought some rosebud tea. It's just dried rosebuds, you put one into your cup and pour boiling water over it. Fantastique!!

What are some of the perks of being a top model? I love being able to travel all over the world.

What are some of the things about being a model that are most difficult? You are contantly under scrutiny and have to realize that people look up to you in some respect, and you have to learn to accept constructive criticism.

...Thanks Shaina! Good luck to you in the future, you're beautiful.
In responce to a comment left on my post about Lily's Arena editorial, I wanted to post this following picture of Iselin Steiro. The comment said the following: I don't think this was a bad move at all...if anything this is what modeling is...selling your body...the fact that Lily has used modeling for charity and stayed in school is impressive.

I agree wholeheartedly that staying in school and doing charity is GREAT, but like I said, the Arena spread seems trashy and degrading to me.

Although I'm not totally in love with Iselin's look, I think the following is an example of selling one's body WHILE staying beautiful and classy.

The editorial, entitled "Nuances Denim", is in this month's Vogue Paris. One of the most naturally beautiful and stunning I've seen in a long time!
A few days ago, I mentioned in a post how much I adore Lily Cole, and her whole environmentally-concious, smart-girl spiel. However...now that I've seen her spread in Arena, a British men's magazine, I'm thinking about changing my opinion. Although the interview is cute and witty, the pictures are, to say the least, trashy as hell. And obviously photoshopped! I just don't get why smartypants Lily would degrade herself like this.
